Honokaa Radio & Television Guide

People in Honokaa receive radio and television signals from sources outside of town, including Hilo, Maui and Oahu.

TELEVISION: Over the air (OTA) television reception is supposed to include services from 4 of the 7 national television networks plus Public Television (PBS). Since the switch from analog TV to digital TV in 2009, OTA reception of TV broadcast stations whose towers were moved from the top of Haleakala mountain on Maui to a lower elevation, is spotty or non-existent in most places. This is based on anacdotal reports received in recent months. If you live in the Honokaa/Hamakua area and would like to report what OTA TV reception is like, email the webmaster.

Most people in the Honokaa area have long opted for cable TV service through Time Warner Oceanic or satellite TV options.

Broadcast TV channel signals originate in Honolulu and are relayed to Maui translators which are received over the air in Honokaa. An outdoor antenna is recommended for optimum reception.

CABLE TV: Time Warner Oceanic Cable supplies cable TV service to the Honokaa area. Their offerings include local broadcast channels and many basic, digital, premium and pay-per-view channels through their subscription services. Oceanic also offers cable internet service to area residents.

RADIO RECEPTION: Most of the FM radio stations receivable in the Honokaa area originate from Maui. Hilo radio station KKBG FM (KBIG) operates an FM translator facility near town. In certain parts of town, the KKBG FM signal is so strong that it interferes with signals from other stations. A low-power religious FM station also broadcasts to Honokaa. It is KJHI at 107.3 FM and is operated by Kings Herald Radio Association.

FM stations from Honolulu can also be received, but reception is spotty depending on where you are. AM reception is available from several stations on Maui, Oahu and in Hilo. Honokaa offers good night time radio reception (Dx) of AM radio stations on the West Coast of the U.S. mainland.
