From: RANOR711 Enjoyed your pictures., but I am really interested in seeing pictures of the sugar mill in Haina below Honokaa town. Also, I expected to see a picture of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic church in Honokaa. A better picture of Honokaa sugar plantation would be nice. I was raised in Haina, attended Honokaa High School and worked in the Macadamia nut orchards in Kapulena.and Kukuihaele as a young man. I am now retired and the pictures brought back nice memories. We're going to camp one night at Kalopa, stay a night at Honokaa Club, walk the Waipio Rim, hit the antique shops. i love Honokaa and i'm always pleased to see that people didn't lie down and die when the mill closed. your website brings back plenty memories! we're gonna be in Honokaa 9/19 and 9/20 BJ

Tommy Toyozaki Neat web site. I'd figure that you had one but I was too busy to search. I'll get together with you sometime soon to get your ideas on the 25th. Honokaa High School's Class of 1975 is planning a 25th reunion for Y2K.
Date: Sat, 03 Jul 1999 20:34:35 -1000 It's been a while since I dropped a line or two. I've been on the Big Island since May 28th and my vacation is about to end on July 8th (very long and deserving!). I am off to Osan AFB, Korea for a one year tour without my family and headed to Hickam AFB after I get back. Honokaa will always be my home and I will probably retire here after I'm done with the Air Force. From all of the places the Air Force has sent me, Honokaa has the safest environment I've ever seen. And Hawaii has so much to offer! I took it for granted growing up here and it's only when you leave and not come back for a long time where you really appreciate the Ohana feeling of the Islands. The town is not the way I remebered it some 14 years ago, but it has been through extensive construction which enhanced the overall town's appearance. Local shops and eateries looks the about the same except the names changed on a lot of them. I will surely miss Honokaa for a year but I'm pleased and assured that I will be home again soon!
HHK Aloha Mel! I admire the beautiful work that you've put together and will come back often now. I am not from Honoka'a but I was a friend with TMS. She is a wonderful person. Anyways, its always great to see a Master at work. Mahalo, HHK.

Chris and Jayne Your Honokaa website is great. We recently bought small acreage near Honokaa for retirement in a few years. Tell me more about the weather. We bought at 1500 feet. We understand that is below the mistline. Tell me about that. Also, about how often does it rain all day. We have heard all about these rains, but every time we have been to the area it seems pretty nice, with a brief shower, but everyone talks about the days and days of heavy rains. What do you see the positive and negative aspects of living in Honokaa? Thanks again for the great site!! The Big Island has experienced periods of drought. It is now going through another. Sometimes the rain in Honokaa can be constant, at other times just a brief shower as you mentioned. Generally the weather is pleasant. Honokaa is a nice place to live if you like a small town atmosphere. It is generally peaceful, quiet and pleasant.

My family is the Souza family of Honokaa, and the Ramos and DeLuz families of Pohakea or Kalopa Homested, whichever. I was born at Hilo Memorial Hospital and grew up in Honokaa and Pohakea, went to Honokaa High School. My Aunt Daisy Souza taught at Honokaa Elementary.

From: Raul Pira Aloha Mel, My name is Raul Pira, an 85' graduate of Honokaa High. I live in New Mexico and I've been in the Air Force for 13 years. I'm stationed at Holloman AFB, only home to the F-117 Stealth fighter jet. Looks like I am going to the Gulf Region again after returning just this past August. The reason I am writing to you is to ask if you are related to my classmate Randall Ah Ching and know of his whereabouts? The last time I heard about him was that he was in the Army. I would like to also encourage you to give out my e-mail address to other Honokaa residents to increase local ties and for people to just keep in touch. I particularily enjoyed your site on the family ranch. I have not been to Nienie in 30 years or so. I think that I have been to your Uncle Holi's ranch only once a long, long time ago. From the pictures, it looks like the ranch is your parents favorite place to go and get away from things. the garden up there is so beautiful, so are the animals, and the reservoir. Because of your website, I think that I will do something pretty much the same. There are so many things I think i could do. the story of Waimea. the story of Kona. Mauna Kea, Kohala, the possibilities are many.

From: DEREGOS Just a quick e-mail to tell you how much I enjoyed your Honokaa web site! Allow me to introduce myself, I'm Peter DeRego and live in Colorado Springs, Co. My father and mother are Augustine and Hazel (Tavares) DeRego both formerly from Honokaa. My grandmother is Alice Tavares and still resides in the Honokaa area along with numerous uncles, aunties and cousins. I have been to Honokaa a few times when I was younger, the last time around 1978 for my 21st birthday and Christmas. I plan to take my wife there next year for our 20th wedding anniversary. I called my parents after discovering your web site and they asked me to e- mail you and send you their warm regards. My father also went to school and played in a band with Myrtle Kealoha whom I believe is your wife. My little sister is getting married Sept. 19th and my wife and myself will be going to Ca. While visiting my parents we will be presenting them with a web-tv in an attempt to bring them into the 90's and so hopefully they will be online soon and can see your web page. Do you know if anyone is planning a Honokaa Class of 69 reunion next year, and how I can get in touch with that person? I currently live in the San Francisco Bay area. Gary Narimatsu Melvin, Wow, been a long time since Mr. Gardner's class. I can't even remember what class that was. I remember that Clyde Muranaka used to like to raise his hand and answer the questions that Mr. Gardner used to ask. Anyway, choice web site. I enjoyed checking out the pictures from Honokaa. The last time I been to Honokaa was way back in 1988. I'm sure that a lot of things have changed there and yet a lot of things still remain the same. Don't know when the next time I going back to Honokaa, maybe in the year 2000. We probably will be having a quarter century class reunion. I will check out your site from time to time. Thanks, this is all pretty impressive to me.
